How To Create a Mood Board for Your Personal Brand

Whenever I start any new branding project a mood board is the VERY first visual asset we create.

Step 1: Gather imagery.

I love to head to Pinterest for inspo and to start pulling images that inspire me and convey the sort of emotions & feelings I want to evoke within the brand identity.

Step 2: Choose a vessel/platform

Creating your mood board together doesn’t have to be complicated. Canva and Illustrator are my favorite tools to create mood boards in but you could even use a Word Doc!

Step 3: Choose 5 colors

This step is IMPORTANT. Your mood board and color palette should be comprised of 5 colors that will represent your brand.

Choose one primary color. This should be the main color you use to represent your brand.

Choose one contrasting color. This color should contrast nicely with your primary color.

Choose one color that compliments both colors above

Choose one neutral color (think: off-white, nude, soft grey, etc)

Choose one color for text (this is typically a very dark color that is legible upon your lighter colors).

Step 4: Put it all together.

Choose whether you’re using Canva or Illustrator! (Your mood board should have space for 5 colors and 3-5 images that ground your color identity!
